Preoperative Visit for Exploratory Laparoscopy

Scenario

The patient is a 20-year-old scheduled for laparoscopic surgery in 2-weeks. This is a preoperative assessment and preparation for surgery. This is a visit to determine whether the patient is fit for surgery. The patient is anxious about the procedure but wants to have it done. They will be traveling to the hospital with a family member.

The patient is comfortable answering questions.

Following the assessment, the learner should have discussed each of the following clearly with the patient assuring their understanding and allowing time for questions:

  1. Provide information about the procedure and the anesthesia
  2. Provide information about the recovery and measures that will be used to relieve pain.
  3. Discuss with the patient matters that will help to improve the outcome of the surgery (not smoking, not taking any NSAIDS)
  4. Discuss NPO status
  5. Discuss the day of surgery expectations
  6. Allow the patient to ask questions.

Note: Refer to the "TIPS Scale for Telehealth Communication Guidelines" prior to the visit.
